My last post was about the Invent Your World Challenge which gives $1000 seed money to approved invention applications and awards one $20,000 scholarship to a grand prize winner.
The 2009 scholarship winner was 15-year-old Javier Fernández-Han for inventing a system that produces energy from algae.
The contest drew nearly 300 entries from 30 countries, according to the organizers; 45 contestants will receive mentoring, funding, and assistance in launching their inventions.
Fernández-Han’s system, called VERSATILE, combines around two dozen existing technologies into six subsystems that treat waste, produce bio-fuel and methane for enegy generation, sequester greenhouse gases, create livestock feed, and for human consumption, and produce oxygen.
The presentation below highlights the overall winner and 4 Achievement Award winners (runners-up). In addition to these 5 winners, another 45 entries will be funded.
